RCN Symposia & Workshops

We organize symposia or sessions at relevant conferences and also workshops for the RCN. We expect to host one workshop per year from 2022-2026. If you would like to attend a workshop, first become a member of the RCN, then fill the Workshop Registration Form.

Symposium #1: Enabling integrative biology with data and collections from the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) - SICB 2022

Location: Phoenix, AZ
Symposium Date: January 4 2022

Symposium information: This is a NEON session for organismal biologists that will be held at the annual meeting of the Society for Comparative and Integrative Biology (SICB). We will have a series of talks by NEON staff as well as field researchers.

Workshop #1: Defining the focus of RCN

Location: Niwot Ridge Mountain Research Station, Colorado
Workshop Date: June 12-15 2022

Workshop information: The focus of this workshop is to define the RCN in terms of what are the crucial questions in integrative organismal biology that can be addressed through NEON infrastructure or data that are collected by NEON. The workshop will be hosted at the Niwot Ridge LTER site, which is also a NEON site where we can meet with NEON field researchers.

Workshop #2: How can NEON advance organismal biology?

Location: Archbold Research Station, Florida
Workshop Date: June 13-16 2023

Workshop information: This workshop will focus on how the National Ecology Observatory Network (NEON) can be used to address outstanding questions in organismal biology and the origins of individual-level variation across scales. Here, the focus on the specific taxonomic groups that NEON focuses on.

Symposium #2: Research Opportunities for Mammalogists within the NEON

Location: Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center, Anchorage, Alaska
Symposium Date: July 14-20 2023

Symposium information: This workshop, as part of the 13th International mammalogical Congress (IMC-13), seeks to incorporate organismal biologists into the community of NEON users by promoting interactions between ecologists and mammalogists.

Workshop #3: Leveraging resources at the NEON Biorepository to advance organismal biology

Location: NEON Biorepository/ASU (Phoenix, AZ)
Workshop Date: May 14-17 2024

Workshop information: This will be the third gathering of the NSF Research Coordination Network (RCN) focused on how the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) can be used to address outstanding questions in organismal biology. We will work to generate a list of “big picture” questions in organismal biology to be addressed using taxonomic data, solidify taxonomic working groups, and develop plans for grant proposals involving NEON Biorepository samples or analysis of existing NEON data.
